Beat Tape Co-Op  - Presents The Foundation Producer Series 37 Introducing JOE90z

Joe90z

Was first introduced to hip hop at an early age when a relative gave him a cassette tape of Crucial Electro on the Street Sounds record label back in the 1980s. Since then, he has been hooked and would stay up late to record radio shows on his boom box.

As a child, he had to wear glasses and his peers would make fun of his looks, calling him "JOE 90." When he was younger, he hated this, but as time went on, he got used to it and turned what he considered a slur regarding his looks into his name for his musical endeavors.

In the early 90s, his main influences were A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and the Beastie Boys, just to name a few. Despite being a massive fan, he didn't start making beats until 2014. That year, he was very ill and after coming out of the hospital, he needed something to focus on. He had the mindset that a distraction from his poor health might lead to attaining a skill and his health might improve.

Joe90z use's Ableton Live and he has an MPK mini, and he recently purchased an MPC Studio. However, he must say that Ableton is his comfort zone when making music.

Beat Tape Co-Op x DJ pHiLLy™ & 210 - Presents: Trackside Burners - #BOOMBAPGRAFFITIRAP

This mixtape came about 2 years ago when I contacted DJ pHiLLy™ & 210 of Trackside Burners Radio Show about the possibility of putting together a mixtape. They decided to chose tracks from various albums off the Beat Tape Co-Op Bandcamp page. After a couple of months working on the mix they sent it over. It originally was suppose to released last year. But wasn't able to get it released on cassette like I had hoped for. So I decided to just release it as a gift for all of you. Please listen to it and share it with others. Enjoy the mix and Thank You to DJ pHiLLy™ & 210 of Trackside Burners Radio Show for their support.

My name is Josh - I’ve been making music for about 10 or so years altogether. Playing in bands (guitar) throughout high school. Soon after school - I had started moving around the country on my own trying to find my place. Without a band, I looked into production. I already had a MacBook for school - so I had GarageBand. I dove in head first from there. I soon met one of my best friends in Buffalo NY, Anthony, who was rapping at the time and I was making beats for him. He passed a few years later, and that took me away from making any music. Life took me across the country to Oakland - and I started DJing out there from someone not showing up and just being at the right place and knowing someone. Ended up getting a monthly gig and figured I could start producing again and working my own remixes into my sets. But most of my stuff then was really downtempo trap oriented. Dark sounding stuff.

A few years of djing and I moved back home to Missouri and settled down and started a family. Being in the house so much had me taking up old hobbies and I dusted off the ol Maschine and installed Logic again.

This time around I understood social media platforms more - searched up beatmakers and branched off of a few homies I knew and found myself in this great community of supportive DIY forward thinkers slapping pads and flipping samples and I fell in love all over again. I haven’t looked back or put the pads down since.

I mainly rock the Akai MPC Live 2 combo’s with my SP404A - I try to keep things strictly hardware since my day job is on a computer. But I also proudly frequent the Koala Sampler app.

Much love and appreciation for putting this series together and allowing me to participate. It’s a huge honor to rock with someone that dedicates their time and energy to this community!

Beat Tape Co-Op Interview With ohricky [Interview] [2022]

Beat Tape Co-Op Interview  With ohricky [Interview]

01. Would you like to introduce yourself beatmaking name or any other alias you go by?

Producer name initially and then Ricky thru out.

02. How long have you been making beats for?

I started Producing 4 years ago! I remember getting the free trial of Abelton and falling in love with the feeling of creating beats.

03. What equipment do you use to make your beats?

My workflow includes a combination of Maschine mk3, Sp 404 mk2/SP 202, PO-33. Any Sampler to me has my attention. Especially now im interested in getting more vintage samplers.

04. What is the one thing every beat must have for it to be solid?

For me, Every beat needs to have a melody to speaks for itself, to me its hard to describe but when you bear a beat you can tell. I think im attracted to sampling because there is usually emotions attatched to the way individuals sample, loop, or melodies. To me its an indicator of what the producer feels and is saying with the beat. Thats why you can have a beat without drums, theres a story there in the melody even if its just looped. Its very deliberate and its very important. Making and choosing samples is therapuetic.

05. Who are some of the best music producers / beatmakers you feel that are working in the industry today?

To me I feel like its split, the Producers in the Industry that I really enjoy are Madlib, Alchemist, Daringer, etc. But on the other side of that theres so many producers who I dont feel are necessarily "in the industry" and they are more independent artist. People who come to mind are Knxwledge, Dibiase, stlndrms, Dirty Art Club and producers like that who drive the culture and I really enjoy them alot. I guess I prefer producers that stand on their own leg and makw their own music without it necessarily needing a rapper /singer. Thats why I love the beat culture, because alot of us consider ourselves artist and not necessarily just producers who make rap beats. Its so much more than that.

06. What is the first thing you listen for when listening to records when you go digging?

In records I try to listen to the song and understand the sample before i Sample it. Im a firm believer that if you dont enjoy the music on its own, you shouldnt sample it but thats just me. On a more technical side, I love coming across keys and bells and warmer tones in general.

07. What genre (soul, jazz, soundtracks, classical, etc.) do you tend to go to when you go to a record store to find samples?

I find my self going to Jazz alot. I wasnt always into Jazz but my wife is a jazz head so she really gelped me get an appreciation for it. Jazz is fun cause you never know exactly what youll find and its usually very soulful and always gots swing! Im also a big oldie head but I find myself listening to it too much to get any beats done. Soundtravks are very fun too cause they usually have been sampled less but they always paint a visual. They have to, they were made for movies!

08. How would you describe your sound or style of beats you make?

Alot of people say Lofi, but to me its just hiphop. Alot of my heros like Madlib and Dilla.

09. What current projects do you have out now? And what future projects are you working on?

Im very proud of my one and only release that just came out in early August. Its called 33til and i produced it entirely on my Pocket Operator 33! To me it has a very dreamy sense to it and the whole thing goes together! Im an album guy for sure! Im also working on. A communitty tape with alot of my favorite online producers! I wanna get into the beat tape game, and I love having physical music so it just makes sense to make more Beat Tapes!

10. Anything else you would like to share or add and would like people to know more about yourself?

Well I love hiphop and I love the communitty. Especially in Sacramento and in Los Angeles, but if youre somehwere there isnt a huge scene, I think you should be the one to start it, dont be scared to be the first one to make some noise, usually others will follow!

Also id like to talk about an awesome communitty im a part of, its called Flip a beat Club (@flipabeatclub) and its a group based out of Sac, but now in Philly, LA, the DMV, and
ohrickybeats's profile picture

Toronto and its it just keeps growing. Its hosted by Dibia$e and Mon$rock is a communitty of producers who just wanna flip samples. It enables people to be active and connect in the communitty. Alot fo producers have alot in common, and we gotta stay connected!

Thank You to ohricky and everyone go check out his latest release: 33til @ https://ohrickybeats.bandcamp.com/album/33til

Beat Tape Co-Op Presents - The Foundation Producer Series 028 Introducing Kollage

Kollage is an artist, music producer, and beatmaker born in South Korea, but a Chicago native since the age of 3. Growing up in southside Chicago in the 90’s, Kollage was first introduced to Hip Hop in late grade school through his friends with the likes of Common Sense, A Tribe Called Quest, Gravediggaz, and Wu-Tang Clan. He gravitated to the raw honesty, hard beats, deep sounds, and diverse creativity of the culture. Along with his friends, they started a crew and he would try his hand at all four elements of Hip Hop, but gravitated to the DJing/Turntablist and production aspects the most.

Over that next decade+, he would continue honing his craft by DJing and producing beats for a variety of local Hip Hop MCs and groups that he was a part of, releasing a solo album, as well as DJing and performing his own music at various venues and festivals in the city and across the midwest. Unfortunately, it was during this timespan that his passion began to wane and he grew disinterested in the local music scene. He also began to focus more on his professional career, in design and technology, and his personal life, getting married and starting a family. This unintentionally turned into an unplanned decade-long sabbatical from performing and releasing music, essentially “disappearing” from the scene altogether, but never actually stopping. He continued to master his craft alone, in the lab, with only his closest friends and family actually hearing the unreleased/unfinished music from that time.

Starting in 2021, coming up on 20+ years of making music and dealing with the stresses and challenges of the pandemic, Kollage needed an outlet. Something he could own and control in a time that felt chaotic. Through those tough times and self reflection, he found a renewed purpose, mindset, and desire to begin releasing music once again, not for the glory or praise, but for the love. He has since been riding this creative wave consistently releasing new music, including: 4 albums, 2 singles, and 1 remix, all in the span of the last 6 months. One of those releases entitled, “Dilla Time!” (an homage and appreciation to the late great J Dilla) was even featured on Okayplayer’s Mixtape Mondays.

About this album
This new album release will be available through Beat Tape Co-Op, a staple and continuous supporter of beatmakers and producers worldwide since 2008. This new volume (#28) in the Foundation Producer Series was created over the course of a month before its release. In that time, Kollage challenged himself to use a limited amount of tools to make the album in a limited amount of time. There was a sound he was attempting to create for this release, and he felt that this constraint can help best achieve the desired result.

There was minimal use of Teenage Engineering’s OP-1, mainly for synth bass-lines that Kollage played himself, with chops and sampling done solely on Teenage Engineering’s handheld battery-operated sampler (PO-33 K.O.), and recorded live into the Zoom R8 multitrack recorder. He then used the individual recorded tracks on the R8 to perform and record the track live while bouncing it down to a single master. Ableton was only used to mix and master the final track from the R8.

This album is unapologetically raw from its sample selection, its imperfect micro-chops recorded live, to how it was intentionally mixed and mastered. That imperfection adds a “life” or humanity that can sometimes get lost in grid-based, sequenced music. If you like or need polish and quantization in the music you listen to, this album wasn’t meant for you. For the heads that want that raw bounce, turn it up!

Cheers,
Jonah
